Auria Expert Discusses NVH Solutions for Current and Future Vehicles at Ward’s Interiors Conference
- Vehicle interior insulation one of the most important demands put on OEMs and suppliers
- Electric vehicles require additional insulation to mask wind and tire noise
- EVs expected to account for 54 percent of new car sales by 2040
DETROIT. – (May 30, 2018) – As vehicles continue to evolve, unwanted noise and vibration, along with increasing demand for solutions to eliminate them, is one of the top-four significant new requirements for vehicle manufacturers, according to a recent industry study released by Roland Berger.
Given the quiet nature of electric drive components and the lightweight body construction of electric vehicles (EV), wind and tire noise can create additional interior noise that had once been offset by the sound of the combustion engine and exhaust system. Because EVs are on the road today and expected to account for 54 percent of new car sales by 2040, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, suppliers are tasked with creating products to make EV interiors much quieter.
“With current combustion-engine vehicles, drivers and passengers have become accustomed to a certain level and type of vehicle noise. As we move toward more EVs, that type of vehicle noise changes significantly,” said Ed Simon, Senior Engineering Manager, Auria. “People expect a quiet interior, adding emphasis on the need for additional noise-reduction components in order to maintain a comfortable interior for the driver and passengers.”
In addition to the changes in the types of noise that drivers and passengers will hear, testing completed at Auria’s NVH technical center in Plymouth, Mich. shows a noticeable difference in the sound pressure levels between an EV and IC engine.
Today, Simon participated in a discussion panel at the Ward’s Interiors Conference with other vehicle acoustic experts, focused on the changing automotive interior environment. During the discussion Simon noted the importance of directly treating noise producing components with acoustic materials as well we offsetting the weight by decreasing the size and material usage of certain pieces.
“Auria provides acoustical solutions to EV programs across the globe, our experience in acoustics goes back nearly half a century, and we’re making advances today that will create a quiet, comfortable passenger compartment for vehicle occupants in the future,” Simon said.
Auria’s product line includes highly engineered automotive acoustics solutions for interior noise reduction.
